RJL is the leading media organization located in Jamaica. It is widely recognized for its contributions to the country’s broadcasting and journalism landscape. RJL operates in various multimedia formats, including radio, television, and online platforms. It is our mission to serve the Jamaican community by providing accurate, timely, and unbiased news, as well as engaging entertainment, through various multimedia platforms, and to do so we collect and use personal data that you provide.

For the purposes of this notice, we act as the “data controller.” We take on this role as we determine how your personal data is used and processed.

We have access to any data that you voluntarily provide via email, telephone, forms, radio and television broadcasting, online platforms, news and entertainment, advertisements and marketing, events and promotion announcements, chat functions, user registration, newsletter sign-up, contests, surveys, and other interactions while visiting with us or using our services.

We process personal data at RJL to fulfill the contractual obligations between RJL and individuals for various services, such as subscription management, payment processing and premium content delivery. This processing is mandatory for the performance of the contract.

In addition, we engage in the processing of personal data for the legitimate interests such as audience analytics, user engagement to improve content recommendations, marketing, research, and business development purposes, granted that these interests do not override the rights, interests, and freedoms of the individuals involved.

Moreover, we may seek and process personal data for other specific purposes with your consent, aligning with legal requirements and regulations. You retain the right to withdraw your consent for processing particular types of data, as detailed in the relevant sections below. Our commitment to compliance ensures that our data processing activities are transparent, secure, and in accordance with applicable laws governing RJL.

We also process personal data for other purposes with consent, but you have the right to withdraw consent to processing for specific purposes, as outlined below.

Specific Data Use

To fully access the 1SpotMedia website, you, as a user, can voluntarily register for an account by completing a registration form. Certain data is collected during this process, including your name, email address and password. This data is used to contact you, suggest appropriate products and services, and improve your user experience as part of the legitimate business and contractual obligations of RJL.

To subscribe to our premium, TVOD and Pay-Per-View content on 1SpotMedia, a registered user must provide contact information (such as name) and financial information (such as credit card number and expiration date). This data is used for billing and to fulfill your order. If there are issues with the order, we may use this information to contact you.

To use our Giftcard feature on the 1SpotMedia website, a registered user must provide contact information (such as name) financial information (such as credit card number and expiration date) and a user created gift code. This data is used for billing and to fulfill your order. If there are issues with the order, we may use this information to contact you.

To subscribe to eGleaner and Jamaica Star daily publications (through our websites), a registered user must provide contact information (such as name, email address, telephone number), financial information (such as credit card number and expiration date), age and gender. This data is used for billing, to fulfill your order, suggest appropriate content, audience analytics and research. If there are issues with the order, we may use this information to contact you. Additional information may also be collected through our subscription email (subscriptions@gleanerjm.com).

To respond to queries and concerns from our radio stations such as Fame 95FM, Hitz 92FM, Power 106FM, website, a guest must provide contact information (such as name, email address, phone number) the department to which the guest is writing and their queries (i.e., message).

To fully access Television Jamaica’s website, you, as a user, can voluntarily register for an account by completing a registration form. Certain data is collected during this process, including your name, email address, gender, and a password. This data is used to contact you, suggest appropriate products and services, and improve your user experience.

Additionally, a registered user on our TVJ’s website may upload photos of individuals for our birthday club greeting.

To advertise with us through our online platforms and/or printed media, personal data may be collected through both physical and electronic forms as well as through our advertising emails (i.e., golsales@gleanerjm.com and advertising@gleanerjm.com). This data is required to enter into a contractual agreement between RJL and our clients and to fulfil your order.

Personal data may be used without knowledge or consent in situations when legally required or permitted, or when personal data has been anonymized or pseudonymized so it is no longer associated with the user. This means we have removed personal identifying information so the data we’re left with cannot be tied back to you as an individual.

How We Share Your Data

Personal data may be shared with regulators in Jamaica in compliance with legal regulations and instructions.

Personal data may also be shared with third parties when it is necessary to provide services to users, and/or for other legitimate interests. Third parties include service providers, strategic partners, our auditors, legal advisors, relevant industry self-regulatory bodies, others where permitted by law and other members of RJL’s network.

Third parties that may access personal data are fulfilling the following services: web hosting, order/purchase fulfillment, IT and cloud services, advisory services, and others. These parties do not retain, share, or use personal data beyond the defined purpose of fulfilling the service.

We share only aggregated demographic data with our partners and advertisers. This data is not linked to the identity of any individual user.

How Long We Store Your Data

We will only retain personal data for the duration necessary to fulfill the purposes for which it was collected. Personal data may also be retained for longer periods if it is solely for archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research purposes, or statistical purposes. We collect credit card information when you place an order via our credit card processor. This data is encrypted and secured throughout its transmission. Secure web access can be verified by the lock icon in your internet browser address bar and by the use of “https” at the beginning of the web address, where the “s” indicates a secure connection.

Employees and third parties are provided only with personal data on a need-to-know basis and only the minimum amount they require to complete their specific job. All employees are also subject to confidentiality agreements and undergo annual training on the proper handling of sensitive data.

Procedures have been developed and tested to handle a potential data breach. These procedures are designed to ensure affected individuals and regulators are notified of the breach and damage can be minimized.

Unsubscribe form promotional emails

If you no longer wish to receive marketing or promotional emails from us, please click the unsubscribe or manage subscriptions link included in the footer of every promotional email we send or contact us directly as provided in the Contact Us section of this Notice.

Information from Social Media Services

RJL allows you to create an account and log in to use the Service through Facebook’s Third-party Social Media Service. If you decide to register through or otherwise grant us access to a Third-Party Social Media Service, we may collect Personal data that is already associated with your Third-Party Social Media Service’s account, such as your name, your email address, your activities, or your contact list associated with that account.

You may also have the option of sharing additional information with RJL through your Third-Party Social Media Service’s account. If you choose to provide such information and Personal Data, during registration or otherwise, you are giving the RJL permission to use, share, and store it in a manner consistent with this Privacy Notice.

Children’s Privacy

Our service does not address anyone under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personally identifiable information from anyone under the age of 18. If you are a parent or guardian and you are aware that your child has provided Us with Personal Data, please contact us. If we become aware that we have collected Personal Data from anyone under the age of 18 without verification of parental consent, we take steps to remove that information from our servers.
